Around the Hotel

The Econo Inn is in the Spenard neighborhood, known for its “gritty” character—not as a bouquet of attractions most conducive to walking. Within a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel are a couple of convenience stores, liquor stores, and fast food for expedient needs; however, the hotel does not advise against walking in general at night due to safety issues. Its walkability supports the needs of life but does not endorse tourism or leisure activities.

The main huddle of downtown Anchorage attractions, including the Anchorage Museum, the 5th Avenue Mall, and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, starts about a 15-20 minute walk away. Technically walkable for some, that said, for most visitors the distance alone and tenor of the neighborhood would prove too great a barrier. A short drive or bus ride is the more practical and safer way to access the heart of the city from this location.

One pretty close attraction is Westchester Lagoon. A fine park area with walking trails and lots of birdlife, this is about a 15 minute walk from the motel-this gives a nice nature out. Yet it is always best to keep in mind your surroundings while walking in this part of the city. A car or public transport is a must to have a comfortable and safe experience.
